Financial Debt Financial Freedom

Financial freedom has such a nice ring to it, doesn’t it? It’s almost like a feeling of flying above the clouds. Financial debt on the other hand has a different sound to it. It sounds like a ball and chain attached to your foot. If any of these scenarios sound familiar to you, then welcome to the world we live in. For some they can relate a little more to the financial freedom, and to others, the financial debt. But one thing most of us do have in common is the fact that we would rather be debt free and financially free.

How do we go about becoming debt free? How did we get into debt in the first place? These questions and many more run through many a person’s mind each and every day. Along with the question of financial freedom, how is that possible? Can I get there from here or will I need to do something else? Is it even possible for someone like me?

All of this sounds very familiar to me, because I for one was over twenty thousand dollars in debt a short time ago. I was actually borrowing money from one credit card to make payments on another. It was like quicksand and I was sinking quickly. Looking back on it now, I still can’t believe the mess I got myself into. I still remember the feelings of frustration that I had each month, having to pay close to one thousand dollars in minimum due payments. Those of you who make credit card payments know what I’m talking about. Each month when the credit card bill came in I noticed that it didn’t go down very much, if at all, in fact sometimes the balance would even be higher.

I needed help badly so I turned to a debt consolidation company which I ordinarily would not have done but I was desperate. The representative I spoke to was nice and informative. She said she was in debt as well and used the very company she now works for to help her get out of debt. Well to make a long story short I signed up for a four and half year plan to pay off my debt. They reduced the interest on all my cards and before I knew it I started gaining ground on my balances. I actually saw the balance going down for the first time in over ten years. Within four years I was within striking distance of my last remaining balance so I sent in the final payment. It was over, a weight had been lifted off my shoulders and I felt like a new man. Never again to be burdened by useless, worthless credit card debt.

Well I’m proud to say that I paid every red cent back to whoever it was owed to and to this day, some five years later I still remain debt free. Although, I was advised to own a few credit cards for just in case situations, each of them has a zero balance. I have to give credit to my debit card at this point. Because I still enjoy the convenience of using a “card” to make most of my purchases, whether it’s getting gas, food, groceries or shopping online. However, if I don’t have the cash in the bank then I don’t make the purchases period!

Let’s turn the page to the question of financial freedom. Is it a formula? Is it a twenty five hours a day, eight days a week, blood, sweat and tears thing? What makes financial freedom a reality for some people? To be honest, I’ve been searching for that elusive answer for some time now and to this day I haven’t found it yet. It hurts a little to say that but I am comforted in the fact that I keep getting back up and keep trying. I may not be sure on how to go about getting financially free but one thing I am sure about is being debt free is a step in the right direction.

Take your debt serious, pay it off. Don’t wait and don’t procrastinate. If something in your life goes horribly wrong debt will only make it worse. Get rid of it so at least you don’t have to deal with that along with everything else that may be on your plate.
